Quit Your Bellyachin’ and Let’s Create a Miracle

Last week we finished the Gratitude Challenge. 8 days of focusing on different aspects of gratitude. It was wonderful to be in a like-minded community of people all focusing their intentions in the same direction and a great lead into Thanksgiving.

One of the powerful exercises we shared was a complaint-free day. I was again reminded of the importance of maintaining a practice and the power of community by something that happened last week.

Jim and I moved recently to a new neighborhood. It’s quiet, beautifully landscaped and filled with open green spaces, bike paths and walkways. We have a wonderful view of grassy marshlands filled with herons, ducks and even an alligator!

Yet I found myself “bellyachin’’ recently to a friend that people keep to themselves and it wasn’t very neighborly. Where were the good old days when you moved into a neighborhood and neighbors welcomed you with a pie or dropped by?

Soon we were going global, lamenting the loss of community in our society, people living in isolation, families being separated by thousands of miles and busy lives, our elderly being relegated to senior homes.  New kinds of community living and neighborhoods ought to be created we agreed.

A few days later, I read an article in our local paper that made me sit up. A music student, “Claire” and her friends were having difficulty in finding affordable housing.

Instead of complaining about the lack of student housing, she approached the administrator of a senior home with a novel idea. In return for free accommodation the students would provide weekly concerts at the nursing home. The administrator agreed.

The idea was a huge success. The seniors loved the concerts but most of all they loved having young people around whom they could learn from. Claire said that it was wonderful to suddenly have grandmas and grandpas full of amazing stories who took an interest in them.

Right in my neighborhood, a miracle in inspired living was taking place because a young girl chose to stop complaining and took a bold action instead. Claire’s creative solution prompted me to visit my neighbor next door and introduce myself. I realized that even though I was new in my neighborhood, I could help create the kind of neighborhood” I desired.

This holiday season we are going to hold an open house and invite our neighbors over so that we can meet them and we’ll be the ones providing pie!

We invite you to be our neighbor too… please read on…

Miracles are happening everywhere around us and the opportunity to co-create them is always available to us. When we join a community where we share a common intention, our capacity to create miracles grows exponentially.

Imagine building on Claire’s idea – what if we turned our nursing homes into affordable shared housing not just for seniors but including single Moms, students and working families?  That creates a community where people can actually take care of each other!

# 5 – I think this is great, insightful “advice” from Abraham….

If we had a child, or anyone, and we caught them doing something inappropriate, we would not amplify it with our words. We would identify what it is we do not want, and then out of it would come the rocket of desire of what we do want, and then we would just visualize, visualize, visualize, until we find peace within our vision. When you make someone and their action the heart of a vision that you’ve spent time on — your relationship improves, your experience is better, and they receive the benefit of the experience. But if you catch them, and see them, and worry about it, and put mechanisms in place to prevent it, now you have not only amplified it, you have now made a commitment that is hooking you both into that, until usually it gets big enough that you break apart, and then you attract others to fulfill that role.–Abraham

And some wise words from Corrie ten Boom (interesting name)….

“Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” – Corrie ten Boom
