The Teachings of Darkness

Look into the darkness. It is the spiritual New Year, the festival of the descent of the Buddha. Each year at this full moon, the festival of Wesak, the Buddha descends into a valley high in the mountains of Tibet to dispense the spiritual gifts for this new soul year. This is the spiritual high point of the year when our souls review the previous year and prepare for the coming year examining our interior world, who we are becoming, how we have evolved over the last twelve months, and what we seek to accomplish in the coming months. During this highly energized time, it is just as important to look into our fears, our pain, our stories, and our failures for our gifts and guidance as it is to look at our joys, our successes, our gains and our hopes.
In the spring of 1986, the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl melted down; in the spring of 2011 the nuclear reactors in Japan are melting down. Two Taurus/Scorpio full moons, two terrifying disasters. On both occasions the governments did not initially know or tell the public the full truth of the escalating tragedies. A quarter of a century later we now know that the Chernobyl disaster was the prelude to the Soviet Union reaching out to rejoin the rest of the world. What will Japan’s suffering offer to the Japanese people and to the rest of the world? Will this be the beginning of the end of nuclear power – both for energy and for destructive weapons?
The ongoing catastrophe at Fukushima is a look into the darkness of human arrogance. Splitting the atom to develop weapons of mass destruction, using this awesome power to provide electricity to our homes and industries rather than developing clean, safe, affordable power sources has been a tragic error. The USSR began to turn the corner onto a new path in 1986 allowing light into a system long closed to the needs of its citizens. It is now time for the world to turn the corner onto an accelerating path toward a sustainable world as we see into a system of weapons and energy that can and will destroy all of us. The light is now shining on the nuclear danger to our capacity to survive and thrive.
Disasters, horrors, tragedies, catastrophes, misfortunes, calamities, accidents and hardships all force us to look into the abyss, into the darkness. Scorpio governs the darkness, Taurus the illumination achieved by facing, feeling and integrating the darkness. We seek the light and often curse the darkness when the darkness is the path toward the light. It is all too easy, too lazy to turn away from the teachings of darkness. It is tempting to shout against our mistakes, our errors, our losses as if we should never have had to confront such agony. Each horror in our individual lives, in our collective lives is as painful as it genuinely is but it is also the grist of human growth, progress and awareness. Each error, even these current tragedies, is the result of the power we humans have developed. We are learning the lessons of the power to destroy. The power to destroy is also the power to transform, the power to become conscious of how powerful we and the universe are. It is time to look into the darkness to see our strengths in our failures; to expand our conscious use of power to light the world with enlightenment.
